It’s May! Springtime is in full bloom while COVID has changed our lives. These days it’s hard to accurately plan for the future. So we stick to the present! There are cool things to celebrate this month, such as Mother’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, and Pizza Party day. One of the most important observances, however, is Mental Health Awareness month.

Why it’s relevant

Mental health care has been at the forefront given higher levels of stress and anxiety. News, unemployment, or disruption due to the coronavirus, there are many triggers. There are responsibilities that require showing up and being present. Mental health is always relevant and yet there couldn’t be a time of greater need for awareness and management tools.

Defining Mental Health

“Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.”

So it is clear that mental health encompasses to our thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Unlike physical health in which we tend to seek support for an ailment, mental health awareness and care is often neglected.

What statistics show

Mental health can be an isolating or solo struggle. In 2020, the struggle is heightened amid a health pandemic and restrictions on physical and social proximity. For coping with the coronavirus-related stress and anxiety, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers the following strategies:

  • Limit the amount of news consumed daily
  • Prioritize self-care moments and mindfulness
  • Increase safe activity
  • Help others in need

Overcoming common barriers

The statistics may seem overwhelming. It is important to remember that you are not alone. There are support resources available.

Mental Health Awareness Tips

From the University Health Service at the University of Michigan, below are five tips to promote and maintain mental health:

  1. Value yourself—be kind!
  2. Take care of your body (balanced diet)
  3. Support yourself with good energy
  4. Set realistic goals
  5. Get help when you need it
